Basic Tools

The basic tools provide navigation and identify functions.

The Basic Tools are located in the white strip directly over the map frame . There are several basic tools that are shown when you start the application. There are two types of tools, those that require you to first click on the icon (to activate the tool), then to click on the map to execute the tool. Others execute as soon as you click the icon.

The basic tools that require you to activate them first are: 'Zoom In', 'Zoom Out', 'Pan', and 'Identify'. The active tool will be shown in a red box, and will also be indicated as the ' Active Tool' in the box below the map frame. When one of these basic tools is activated, you will see the curser change to match the icon. The 'Zoom In' tool is the default active tool when you start your session. The remaining basic tools are executed as soon as you click on them, you do not click in the map. These are 'Zoom to State', 'Zoom Previous', and 'Zoom to Layer'.

The toolboxes to the right of the basic tools contain more advanced tools, and their functionality is covered in the Toolboxes section of the help notes.

Zoom In

Click on this tool to activate it, then click once on the map to zoom in 50%, centered on the point where you clicked. Or you can drag a box on the map to zoom to that box. Certain layers do have scale dependencies , and will not draw until you have zoomed in far enough.

If one of the data layers in the layers list shows a check in the grey box, then it will be visible. If instead of a check, there is a magnifying glass in the grey box, then the layer will become visible when you have zoomed in far enough to meet the scale dependencies.

Zoom Out

Click on this tool to activate it, then click once on the map to zoom out 50%, centered on the point where you clicked. Or drag a box on the map to zoom out from that box. Note that you cannot zoom out further than the State view. Also note that as you zoom out, certain layers will turn off, and the layers tab will show a magnifying glass instead of a check in the grey box. To see them again, you must zoom back in.

Zoom to Full Extent

Click on this tool once to return to the State view zoom level. Once again, some layers may turn off at the State level. Also note that if there are a lot of layers turned on that do map at the State level, drawing time will be increased for the State map.

Back to Last Extent

Click on this tool once to return to the last previous map extent. If you are at the state level, then zoom to a county, you can click this to return to the state level. Clicking this tool again will return you back to the county view (the last previous map extent).

Pan

Click on this tool once to activate it, then use your mouse to drag the map in any direction. This is similar to the navigation borders around the map frame, but with more control. The map will move with your mouse, but only the portion already drawn will show until you release the mouse. Then the map will re-draw at the new map extent.

Hyperlink

Click on this tool once to activate it, then click on a Geodetic feature on the map to access the linked documents associated with that feature. The document will typically be an Adobe PDF. Please be aware that the tool will identify features only in a layer that has been selected in the 'Layers' tab as both the active select and active identify layer. This is accomplished by clicking in the blue and green circles next to that layer. The blue circle will change to a black circle with the letter 'i' to indicate it is the active identify layer. The green circle will change to a black circle with the letter s to indicate it is the active identify layer. Only layers within the 'Geodetic Data' folder are set-up to work with the hyperlink tool.

Identify

Click on this tool once to activate it, then click on a feature on the map to get information about that feature. Please be aware that the tool will identify features only in the layer that has been selected in the 'Layer' tab as the active identify layer. Select the layer that you want to use for identify by clicking in the blue circle next to that layer. The blue circle will change to a black circle with the letter 'i' to indicate it is the active identify layer.
